Enough to Live

This is an initiative from a group of charities and faith groups, (including End Furniture Poverty), to draw attention to the needs of the poor in our society and to highlight the gap between what is required and what is the current level of provision.

Campaign messages:

We believe that people should have enough to live, during this winter’s cost of living emergency and beyond.

Urgent government action is required, offering targeted support to those in greatest need, to take us through this winter’s emergency.

Whilst emergency measures will provide much needed respite this winter, the government must commit to this support being the first steps on the longer journey towards a poverty free Britain.

What do we want

The government must ensure that everyone has enough to live through this winter and beyond, and commit to build back from this moment of crisis to turn the tide on poverty for good.

Short term

To begin, the government should introduce a package of emergency support measures which:

  • Ensure targeted support for the poorest households, accounting for need based on size, income and disability.
  • Provide enough additional finance to households to ensure that everyone can meet rising costs and cover essential needs.
  • Utilise the social security system as the quickest route to distribute support to those who need it most.

Long term

Once this essential emergency support has been put in place, the government should build on this to address rising and deepening poverty to turn the tide on poverty for good.

To do so, they should work with people who have been struggling to keep afloat every day, and charities and faith groups who work alongside them, to design solutions that work towards a poverty free Britain.
