Living without window coverings can have a wide range of impacts. It can affect people’s sleep because they are unable to block out light in their bedroom. It can mean rooms are colder without the insulating factor of curtains or blinds. And for people who are fleeing situations like domestic violence, it can make them feel exposed and unsafe which can have devastating consequences for already fragile mental health.
“No curtains is really scary for a victim of domestic abuse suffering from PTSD.” – A support worker
There are at least 870,000 people living without curtains or blinds, and over half of them live in social housing.
If a home does not have window coverings, that is clearly visible from outside the property, adding to that stigma of furniture poverty, and affecting people’s pride in their home. It also affects people’s privacy and security.
